My New Artist
The artist I found Rob Murphy was unable to make a photo shoot or interview, so I found an alternative  artist Thomas. Thomas fits in well with my chosen genre which is Indie. Thomas is very passionate about music, and love to play his guitar. He has uploaded his covers of songs on the social networking site 'Youtube', and every day he is gaining more view on each of them.

Idea's for my photo shoot

I have arranged for my artist Thomas and another model Kian to come to my school on Tuesday 29th. I will be taking photos for my front cover, contents page and content page, I will be using the photo studio to take the photos for the front cover, but I am going to take photos outside around the school for the contents page and double page spread.

I have a clear image of what I want my models to be wearing, and how they are going to be posing.
My artist I have asked to be wearing black skinny jeans and a plain blue top with Vans. The reason why my artist is going to be wearing a blue top is because my colour scheme is blue and it would be effective if the colour is shown through what my models are wearing. These photos are going to be taken in the photo studio, and the shot that I am going to be using is a medium close up. The reason why I have chosen to use a medium close up is because when I researched about music magazines, they all used medium close ups for the front covers and I wanted to stick to the main features of a music magazine. My artist is also going to be holding a guitar, this shows from the front cover what the magazines going to be about.

My other model Kian is going to be featured on my contents page, he fits the stereotype of an Indie artist very well. Kian is going to be also wearing black skinny jeans, vans and a blue shirt. He is going to be posing with a skate board, because I think the skate board represents an item for the genre of Indie. These pictures are going to be taken outside because the photos would look more realistic, than if they were taken in the photo studio.

Interaction with my artist Rob Murphy
To interact with my artist I use the social networking site Twitter, this allows me too tweet him and send him direct messages. I asked my artist if he was free to come into school where I could then interview him and take photos of him which would be featured in my magazine.
But unfortunately he is unable to make it, but I have found an alternative artist who is able to make an interview and they are fine with me to take photos of them.

Shot List
My shot list describes where I will be taking the photos, who my models are, what they will be wearing  and why I am taking the photos.

In todays lesson

Today we had a photographer who came in, and gave us a photography workshop. In the workshop we were introduced to photoshop, and how we can edit our photos further by retouching the photos, cropping a certain part of the photo and we learnt how to use the spot healing brush tool and the clone stamp tool. Later on in the lesson we had the opportunity to take photos in our photo studio and edit them further on Photoshop.

The spot healing brush tool allows you to earase any spots or inperfections.

The clone stamp tool allows you to, take a part of the picture and paint over it with the part that you cloned.

New and Improved Flat Plan
From the feedback I got from my class mate, I improved my flat plan by adding more colour and detail to the front cover and contents page.

I improved my front cover by adding the name of the magazine and presented it in a font that I might use for my final front cover. I also added more text in the boxes, these included a competition, quote and top 10 in the charts. I didn't colour in the background because I am still not sure where I am going to take the photo's of my artist. My title 'Boombox' would be left white so it stands out against a background that I pick.

In my contents page I changed the title, instead I used a simple font that can be read easily, and added blue colour to it, to make it stand out. The drawing of the tap will be created on Photoshop, this would add a sense of creativeness to the magazine. The tap strip will be made to spell a word that is associated with Indie Music. Again I left the background white because until I have the photos taken  I am then going to pick the colour, so that the colour goes with the photos.

Peer Assessmanent: How successful is your flatplan?

In our lesson today, we had to swap our flatplans and mark each others. We gave some detailed feedback on what was great about the designs and what might need improvement.
Precious, my class mate, marked my flatplans of the music magazine against the criteria given by Miss Silva. From this constructive criticism I gained some reassurance about what I had done so far. My layout suited my target audience well and I had a good understanding of the conventions. However I also know that I must make improvements to the following:

Add more fonts to the front cover
Add more text on the double page spread
Add colour
To make sure my flat plan has all these corrections, I am going to create another flat plan where the changes will be made.

The colours I have chosen to use is
Black, White and Light Blue

The reason why I picked this colour scheme, was because the colours complimented each other, also the colours are bright/vibrant and would stand out against any other Indie magazine.

This magazine cover inspired me to pick the colours that I have, because the colour Blue went well with the genre 'Indie'. The blue appeals to both boys and girls and also the colour is eye catching, this would draw people in to look at the magazine.

Colour Swatches

These are the colour swatches that I have come up with, which I think would match well to my chosen genre.
When I was looking/analysing music magazines, I noticed that the front covers, contents pages and double page spread only used three different colours. These included black and white and one other colour, the one other colour should be a colour that would suits the target audience. By keeping the colours on the magazine simple, it doesn't overwhelm the reader and keeps the magazine look sophisticated.
I chose to stick with the main features of a magazine, so I made the decision to use the colours black, white and one other colour.
My first colour swatch I used the colour 'Purple', this represents the younger generation and would suit my magazine well, but I think that the colour would appeal to the females more than males and I wanted my magazines to appeal to both.
The second one is 'Dark Blue', this colour suits the genre I have chosen 'Indie', but the colour I think is a little bit too dark and wouldn't stand out against other magazines on the shelf.
  • The dark blue colour swatch was too dark, so my next idea was a 'Lighter Blue'. This blue is vibrant, bright and goes well with the colours black and white, also this colour would appeal to my target audience (16 to 18 year olds). If I used this colour scheme I think it would stand out from other magazines.
  • I experimented with different shades of blue, this blue is in-between the dark blue and the light blue. This blue in my opinion looks dull and if i used these colours in my final magazine I don't think people would warm to the magazine and it wouldn't be as popular.
  • The colour 'Red' was the first colour that came into my mind when thinking of different colour scheme, although the colour is vibrant and solid, I think the colour would suit a Rock or R'n'B magazine more than a Indie one.
  • My final colour swatch was a mix between pink and purple. This colour is bright, eye-catching and vibrant, and also goes well with black and white, but I think this colour is too girly, and if I picked this colour I would be taking a big risk because boys wouldn't buy it.

Designing a flatplan
  • It must be as deatiled as possible with text and colour completed. It should look like your completed magazine (apart from your interview).
  • You should show how your research has influenced the design of the flatplan and should include a minimum of different images.
  • The design can and will change and adapt but you must always explain and justify these changes.
  • At the end, the finished magazine should be recognisable from the flatplan.

My chosen artist Rob Murphy singing 'Lego House' by Ed Sheeran

Main features of a music magazine front cover
From looking at many different music magazines I have made a list of what I think is the main feature on a front cover:

. Master Head - The master head is the company of the magazines logo, when looking at different music magazine the master head is very important. It is very important because I think it is what attracts the reader, and if the master head looks really good then people would think the magazine would be good too, and they would want to read the whole magazine.
When looking at different music magazines the master heads linked in with the genre of the music e.g. the teenage magazine 'Top of the Pop', they used a font which would appeal to the target audience, and when you first look at it, it looks like it suits the genre of the magazine.

. Main image - The main images on a magazine front cover mostly cover the whole page, this will appeal to the audience more than an smaller image. Also the main images use the eye contact of the artist to make the magazine more personal to the reader, also by using a main image it gives the reader a clue what the magazine is about and what it is going to include.

. Colour scheme - The colour scheme in my opinion I think is very important, the reason why I think this is because along with the main image it is what attracts the reader from other magazines on the shelf. When looking at different magazine I have found that the colours should appeal to your target audience and suit the magazine genre.

. Barcode - When looking at different magazines the barcodes on the front covers, were normally placed on the right hand corner. The reason why I think they were placed there was because the barcode wouldn't take the attention away from the main image, but still the barcode is readable and easy to find.
. Pull quote - Pull quotes are a good way to attract the reader, if the pull quote is interesting and sound like there is more to it, the reader would want to buy the magazine and read the whole interview. The pull quote would normally be placed on or next to the artist featured on the front cover of the magazine.

The final Sub-genre I have chosen is....

The reason I have chosen to base my magazine on the genre 'Indie' is because I think there is a gap in the market for an upcoming artists who not yet been discovered. At the moment in the charts there is James Arthur who won the X Factor and Ed Sheeran, in my opinion these are the main Indie artists in the top 40 and I think they are very successful and they have both had No.1 hits. Also Indie music is very different form any other music, and I think by focusing my magazine on Indie music it would make my magazine different from others and stand out.

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.”
Feedback form my questionnaire

Top of the Pops double page spread analysis

From analysing this double page spread I have learned:
. Keep the colour scheme running throughout the magazine, this makes the magazine look professional
. The photos featured on the double page spread should either be a long shot or a medium shot, by using a medium shot you can see more detail
. For a magazine targeted at teenagers, the text should be separated into paragraphs this would make it easier for the target audience to read
. The pull quotes should be interesting and should make the audience want to read the whole article

WE<3POP Double Page Analysis

What I have learned from analysing this double page spread:
. In my double page spread, I think I would place my artist on one side of the page. I think this will appeal to my target audience, because the more/bigger photos there is the better the magazine
. Feature a pull quote, this will attract the audience and would make them want to read the whole article
. The photo of the artist, the eyes should be looking at you, this will make the photo and article more personal to the reader

Focus Group

In my focus group, I wanted to focus on what should be included in my magazine and if the artsits I have chosen would appeal to the age group that I picked (16 to 18).
WE<3POP Contents page analysis

What I have learn form this analysis:
. When picking colour to use for the contents page make sure they match with the front cover and they also match the target audience of the magazine
. Use different fonts for the titles and the writing, the fonts of the titles should be more bold to attract the reader and this would make the reader want to read underneath
. Align the photos in an organised manner, don't scatter them all over the page, this will make the page look messy and would put the readers off
. Include the right amount of information according to the target audience, if the target audience is for younger children then there should not a lots of text. On the other hand if the target audience is adults then there might be more text on the page.

My Completed Survey
I created my survey in SurveyMonkey, this website allowed me to write a group of questions, and there answers. Some of my answers I used multiple choice options and text box. Once I finished the survey I posted a link to twitter, and tagged my friends who are in the right age group.
This is the link to my survey on survey monkey

This tweet is showing that I'm using social media sites to get responses from my survey, which would help influence my magazine.

Research Type

This table I have created includes what questions I have thought of that I am going to ask my target audience, it also includes my plan to film my focus group, I have stated what I'm going to ask them and how many people I am going to ask. This table gives me an outline of what I need to do and how I'm going to carry it out.
Rob Murphy

Rob Murphy is a singer/songwriter, he does covers of songs and originals. His style is Indie, but covers songs that he likes.

I contacted Rob through Twitter asking for a retweet, he replied and now I'm waiting for him to reply back to my questions which will then be featured in my magazine.

WE<3POP Analysis

From analysing the magazine WE<3POP I have learned:
. Place the logo of the magazine somewhere visible, so the audience can identify the magazine easily
. Use about 3 main colours in the front cover and they should be the colours that are used throughout the magazine, this makes the magazine look professional
. Use colours that will suit the target audience chosen e.g. this magazine uses pink, black and white these colours suit the target (teenagers)
. The main photo should take up the whole page, and the eyes of the artist should be looking at you because this makes the magazine more personal

Hobbie Stuart is an artist who has become famous through Youtube. His first YouTube upload was a cover of Rihanna's 'Only girl in the world', this cover got 385,165 and still counting. Hobbie Stuart is most famous for his cover of Rihanna's 'Diamonds', this cover got 2,547,148. Although Hobbie is famous on Youtube because his videos got so many views his been featured on TV, this has gained him extra fans and support. I would like to contact Hobbie through Twitter, and ask questions about his music career, and hopefully feature the interview in my double page spread in my magazine.

This wordle has been created on Illustrator, to create this image I have used a music note as an template and filled in the inside with words that are linked with the word Music. All the words used link with either music words such as Rhythm and some music instruments.
Mood board of music magazine contents pages

This music note has been created on Illustrator. The design is made by arranging words associated with music magazines in the shape of a music note. These words are describing the magazines layout and things that are featured in the magazine.
Yay :) completed the re-do of the question "Discuss the issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in your chosen media area."
